The findings of the Bergin report into Sydney’s second casino licence are, without doubt, damning for Crown Resorts and for the man who is identified as exercising the real power at Crown, controlling shareholder James Packer.
Former NSW Supreme Court judge Patricia Bergin says in no uncertain terms that Crown is not a “suitable person” to hold its casino licence at Barangaroo – but she does hold out the possibility that it may be in the future. “If Crown is to survive this turmoil and convert itself into a company that can be regarded as a suitable person and achieve the same for the Licensee, there is little doubt that it could achieve a fresh start and emerge a very much stronger and better organisation,” she says.Credit:Louie Douvis

The Crown case is that sometime between September 1, 2007 and late May 2008, Eddie Obeid, 77, and his son Moses, 51, became part of a conspiracy with former mining minister Ian Macdonald, 71. NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro says a minimum spending requirement of $1 million determined which councils received funding from a $177 million bushfire relief fund last year, despite almost half of all projects funded falling under that amount. A reptile park is calling for residents of Sydney and surrounds to catch funnel web spiders found in their homes to be milked for their precious antivenom amid a donation shortage.

Sydney commuters will be forced to play “spot the difference” after the City of Sydney council decided to rip out bus shelters, public toilets, kiosks and billboards – and replace them with items that look eerily similar at a total cost of about $100 million. More than three decades before David Hua joined SBS’s leadership team, taking over as director of audio and language content last December, he found the multicultural broadcaster to be a daily source of annoyance. “As a small child, I was very active and I just wanted to play with my parents,” says the veteran media executive, who spent 15 years in various roles at the ABC. “But at 3 o’clock every afternoon, they would stop to listen to the Vietnamese news on SBS Radio, which was a real frustration to me.”Credit:James Brickwood

Life in lockdown for mum-of-three Courtney Lardner last year was totally disruptive. Her partner lost his full-time job, her one-year-old was sent home from daycare and she was left supervising the education of daughter Imogen, then in year 5, and son Jason, in year 4, who also has a learning disability.
It was made all the more challenging by the family’s lack of digital devices: they attempted to borrow a laptop from their school near Campbelltown, in south-western Sydney, but everything was quickly snapped up. “We basically lived off what we had. We were using phones to do the reading side of things. Phones, the iPad [and] I paid the money to get a decent printer,” Ms Lardner said.Credit:Edwina Pickles
